Peer Group Distributions

What the charts compare: Each chart sets the seven asset-size tiers side by side for one measure. Two comparisons run through the page: the medians from tier to tier show how a measure changes with size, and the width of each box shows how much credit unions within one tier differ from one another. Where a measure varies with size, the typical (median) credit union and the asset-weighted aggregate can differ widely, because the aggregate gives the largest institutions the most weight.
Box plots show the interquartile range (P25–P75) with the median (P50) marked. Whiskers extend to P10 and P90; the ◆ marker is the dollar-weighted (system) value — where it sits relative to the median is the gap between the typical credit union and the asset-weighted aggregate. Each peer group is defined by total assets; data as of June 30, 2026.

The seven asset-size tiers and the number of credit unions in each. Every box plot below rests on its tier's count, so a box for a tier with few credit unions is a small sample.

Capital Adequacy

The regulatory net worth ratio and the equity ratio, each as a share of total assets. GAAP equity includes the unrealized securities gains and losses carried in AOCI and the net worth ratio does not, so the difference between the two ratios at any tier reflects AOCI.

Asset Quality

The 60+ day delinquency rate and the annualized net charge-off ratio. A loan is delinquent before it is charged off, so the first chart shows loans that are behind on payment and the second the losses already realized on them.

Earnings

Return on average assets, followed by four measures behind it. The net interest margin and the cost of funds are both taken against average assets, so the margin is what remains of interest income once the cost of funds is paid; the yield on loans is taken against average loans. The efficiency ratio is non-interest expense as a share of gross income, so a lower ratio means operating cost absorbs less of each dollar earned.

Liquidity & Sensitivity

Three measures of balance-sheet structure. Cash and short-term investments are the liquid end of the balance sheet, and borrowings measure reliance on wholesale funding against shares and net worth.

Growth

Annualized growth in shares and deposits and in membership. At the smallest credit unions a single new employer group or a lost sponsor can swing the balance sheet, so the boxes for the smallest tier are read as the variation of small balance sheets rather than as a trend.

Data sourced from NCUA 5300 Call Report filings, latest reporting quarter. Box = interquartile range (P25–P75); whiskers = P10–P90; midpoint = median (P50). Distributions are of per-credit-union values within each asset-size peer group; income and growth ratios are annualized. The median credit union differs from the asset-weighted system aggregate, and the more a metric varies with size, the wider that gap.
